Thirst for God

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? (Psalm 42:2)

But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; but the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw." (John 4:14-15)

This passage from John 4 is part of an unlikely conversation Jesus had with a Samaritan woman. It was noon, and they were by a well. Jesus was physically thirsty, but that woman had a thirst in her soul. Jesus offered what no one in the world can offer: the true source of satisfaction.

With a fair amount of certainty, that woman, like you and me, had probably tried to quench her existential thirst with many sources of joy. But none of them had worked until that day when she had her encounter with Jesus.

The Lord is the only inexhaustible source that satisfies our souls. Seek to drink from the water that Christ gives. Only in His presence will you feel completely satisfied.

Drink from the right source.

  • Don’t confuse having a full and satisfying life with obtaining the riches and pleasures of this world. Drink directly from the true Source: Jesus Christ.

  • God is the source of clear waters. Think about this: no impure or artificial drink can satisfy thirst like pure, clear water. Don’t be deceived by the other things in this life... Only God can fill the emptiness in your soul.

  • Return to God and be filled with Him. Read the Bible and pray, asking the Lord to fill your heart with the fullness of life that Jesus Christ gives.

Prayer:

Lord God, You are the source of living waters. You are the pure, clear, and inexhaustible source that strengthens and fills the emptiness of my soul. Help me to seek Your presence when I walk through the deserts of life. Be my breath in times of dryness, affliction, and anxiety. Deliver me from the deception of illusionary oases.

I need You, Lord! Just as the thirsty one needs to drink, I depend on You. I pray to You in the name of Jesus. Amen.
