"When they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel, they will rejoice, those who have despised the day of small beginnings."— Zechariah 4:10a

Before a marathon runner can complete the race, they must first learn to take that first step. Small beginnings may seem too simple or even embarrassing to some. However, it is a fact that many people who achieve success in their lives have had quite modest and sometimes uncomfortable starts. In today’s verse, we see encouragement from the Lord to the prophet Zechariah to motivate those returning from exile in the reconstruction of the temple. Another translation says: "They have despised the day of small beginnings."

A good example in the Bible is David, the king who started as a simple shepherd. He gave his best in this initial role with gratitude and praise to the Lord. Because God, who sees the heart, honored him by entrusting him with an even greater flock: the great nation of Israel. And you? Do you have a challenging task like the reconstruction of the temple? Do you feel small and forgotten amidst the sheep’s pasture? Do not despise humble beginnings! Be encouraged! Keep faith and trust in the one who can reward your efforts and turn simple things into something very special.

Be diligent in small things:

  • Pray and thank the Lord for your current condition, even if it is modest and humble.

  • Seize the opportunity to be faithful in little things. God promises much more (Matthew 25:23).

  • Give your best, work diligently, and do so even if people do not see you.

  • Do not be ashamed of small tasks. They can be valuable preparation for something greater to come.

  • God is with you! Seek daily to know Him better through His Word.

  • Seek to glorify God in the small things.

To pray:

My beloved Jesus, You are my Lord and my best friend. Help me not to despise the small beginnings in life. Teach me to strive, to be grateful, and faithful along this journey. I ask for Your blessing and guidance. May I praise and honor You for all that happens in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
